Illinois' Competitive Energy Landscape

Illinois consumers benefit from robust retail competitive choice for both electricity and natural gas.

More than 60% of the total electric usage by customers of the state’s two largest utilities is being provided by competitive energy suppliers. Alternative retail gas suppliers provide gas supply service to tens of thousands of customers, including residential and small non-residential customers.

RESA is an active participant in proceedings before the Illinois Commerce Commission on matters such as utility consolidated billing and purchase of receivables that help facilitate the state’s vibrantly competitive retail energy market.

The Illinois Commerce Commission has instituted a rulemaking proceeding on municipal aggregation of customers.
