Maryland's Competitive Energy Landscape

Maryland consumers are enjoying increasing opportunities for competitive choice among energy suppliers in an increasingly competitive retail electricity market.

The ability to purchase competitively priced natural gas is limited to large industrial and commercial users who purchase and ship gas on the pipeline system.

RESA is active in proceedings before the Maryland Public Service Commission regarding state mandates for development of in-state generation facilities, the provision of standard offer service by incumbent utilities, and consumer protection rules.

RESA has been active in testifying before Maryland lawmakers on a range of issues, including opposition to reregulation of the state’s successful competitive electricity market, preventing consumers from bearing the costs of uneconomic generation development, and encouraging consumer education regarding customer choice in electricity.
