HISTORY OF ENERGY CHOICE IN MAINE
Electricity Market
Maine restructured its electricity market in 2000, enabling residential and business customers to shop for electricity from competitive retail suppliers. Retail choice provides Maine consumers with access to competitive pricing, fixed-rate contracts, and renewable energy products from licensed suppliers. Retail energy choice empowers consumers with access to competitive pricing, flexible contract terms, renewable energy options, and enhanced customer service—benefits not typically available under traditional utility monopolies.
Maine is one of 13 states and the District of Columbia that offer retail energy choice.
 Gas Market
Maine does not offer retail choice for natural gas residential consumers. Commercial and industrial customers have limited choice depending on their location and utility.
RESOURCES FOR MAINERS
The Maine Public Utilities Commission (PUC) provides resources to help consumers understand and compare their electricity supply options. While Maine does not have a centralized shopping website, information about available competitive suppliers can be found on the PUC’s website
For help with energy terminology, refer to RESA’s energy glossary. RESA also offers a consumer education guide and an energy shopping guide.
