HISTORY OF ENERGY CHOICE IN NEW JERSEY

Gas Market

The Gas Public Utility Regulatory Act of 1997 opened retail competition within New Jersey’s gas market. By the late 1990s, residential and business consumers could choose alternative gas suppliers. Retail choice offers the potential for competitive pricing, flexible contracts, renewable energy options, and enhanced customer service compared to standard utility monopolies.

Electricity Market

New Jersey launched its energy choice program in 1999 with the passage of the Electric Discount and Energy Competition Act (EDECA). This legislation allowed customers to select an alternative source of electricity supply from third-party suppliers. Under EDECA, New Jersey’s incumbent utilities had to separate their generation and distribution functions. New Jersey is one of 13 states and the District of Columbia that offers retail energy choice.

RESOURCES FOR NEW JERSEY CONSUMERS

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities developed the NJ Power Switch website, a tool to help consumers make informed decisions when shopping for gas and electric supply products from third-party suppliers.

For help with energy terminology, refer to RESA’s energy glossary or the resources available on NJ Power Switch. Additional consumer education tools, including guides on energy shopping, are also provided.
