HISTORY OF ENERGY CHOICE IN CONNECTICUT

Gas Market

In April 1996, Connecticut was restructured, allowing commercial and industrial customers the option to choose a Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) registered gas supplier. PURA maintains a list of registered gas marketers for commercial and industrial customers. Each local distribution company posts a list of gas marketers that provide services to customers on their respective distribution systems.

Competitive natural gas is not available to residential customers in the state.

Electric Market

In 1998, Connecticut restructured its electric utility industry with the passage of Public Act 98-28, enabling consumers to choose their electricity suppliers. Retail choice allows consumers to benefit from competitive pricing, flexible contracts, renewable energy options, and improved customer service compared to traditional utility monopolies. Connecticut is among 13 states and the District of Columbia that offers retail energy choice.
