Federal Trade Commission

What is the FTC?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is an independent agency of the federal government that works to protect consumers and promote competition in the marketplace. The agency helps prevent unfair, deceptive, and anticompetitive business practices across a wide range of industries.

History

The FTC was established in 1914 when Congress passed the Federal Trade Commission Act. The agency was created to enforce antitrust laws and ensure businesses compete fairly. Over time, the FTC’s responsibilities expanded to include consumer protection, fraud prevention, and oversight of advertising and marketing practices.

What Does the FTC Do?

The FTC investigates unfair or deceptive business practices, enforces consumer protection laws, and promotes competition among businesses. The agency works to prevent fraud, false advertising, identity theft, and anticompetitive conduct that could harm consumers or limit market choice.

The FTC also provides educational resources to help consumers make informed decisions and understand their rights.

The FTC’s Role in Retail Energy

In states with restructured electricity and natural gas markets, consumers can choose their energy supplier from competing companies. The FTC supports these competitive markets by promoting fair competition and protecting consumers from deceptive marketing practices.

While state public utility commissions regulate retail energy suppliers and oversee market rules, the FTC may investigate companies that engage in unfair or misleading business practices. The agency’s oversight helps ensure consumers have access to accurate information when comparing energy plans and selecting a supplier.

By supporting competitive markets and consumer protection, the FTC helps create an environment where consumers can benefit from greater choice, innovation, and competitive pricing in retail energy markets.
