HISTORY OF ENERGY CHOICE IN RHODE ISLAND
Electricity Market
In 1996, the Rhode Island Utility Restructuring Act introduced competition into the state’s energy market. This restructuring unbundled energy supply and distribution, giving residential, industrial, and commercial customers a choice in their energy supplier. Retail choice offers the potential for competitive pricing, flexible contracts, renewable energy options, and enhanced customer service compared to standard utility monopolies. Â Rhode Island is one of 13 states and the District of Columbia that offer retail energy choice.
Gas Market
While all Rhode Island customers have a choice in their electricity supplier, only business and industrial customers can select their own natural gas provider. Currently, there are no competitive natural gas options for residential customers.
