Cupid’s Arrow Has Struck – Millions of Americans Have Fallen in Love with their Right to Choose Electric and Gas Suppliers

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania – Consumers in competitive states are finding many electric and gas suitors seeking to serve their energy needs and business and residential consumers are responding to these offers. Florists, jewelers, bakeries, restaurants and chocolatiers are among many small businesses choosing to take retail electric and gas supply.

“Over the last decade we have seen consumers really begin to embrace their right to choose someone other than their traditional utility for their electric and natural gas needs,” said David Fein, President of RESA. “With improved consumer education, technological innovation, and robust competition, shopping for electricity and natural gas service has become as easy as ordering flowers online. In many States, interested customers can simply visit their local Public Utility Commission website to find competitive offers in their utility service area, compare products, prices and terms, and request to switch to the supplier and product of their choosing. It’s all about being able to take control of your energy needs and selecting a supplier of your choosing.”

Traditional monopoly utility service has given way to competitive energy service in more than 17 states and Washington D.C. over the last decade, providing consumers new and different options to power their homes and businesses. More than 12 million U.S. business and residential consumers combined have already made the switch from utility to competitive supply.

“Whether consumers choose to purchase renewable energy options or participate in a program where they receive free air miles, a gift card, free days of service, or some other benefit, the market is now offering more options to consumers,” said David Fein. “As more consumers enjoy the benefits of competition, and as the markets continue to develop, suppliers will develop a greater variation of products and services. So we encourage all consumers, especially residential and small commercial consumers, to explore their energy choice options.”
