Doing More with Less: Energy Efficiency Day 2025

October 2 is Energy Efficiency Day across the United States. According to EnergyEfficiencyDay.org, hundreds of organizations, universities, businesses and governments are participating in the national awareness campaign this year. The goal is to share tools and tips that help people reduce waste and unlock the benefits of smarter energy use.

To mark the occasion, here are five actions you can take to reduce your home or company’s energy footprint:

  1. Optimize your thermostat. A smart thermostat doesn’t just control the temperature; it learns your home or office routine and adjusts accordingly. According to the EPA, consumers can save up to 10% a year on heating and cooling costs by adjusting the thermostat 7–10°F for 8 hours a day.
  2. Tune up your HVAC. Just like cars, heating and cooling systems operate more efficiently with regular maintenance. Changing filters every 1–3 months and scheduling an annual service check helps keep systems efficient and extend their lifespan.
  3. Go paperless (or at least paper-light). Every page printed uses energy, ink and resources. Switching to digital documents and using cloud storage reduces waste and lowers costs.
  4. Use natural light. Sunlight is free and energy efficient. Using natural light during the day, when possible, instead of artificial lighting, can help conserve energy resources. You can also add blinds or reflective window films to prevent overheating during the summer months.
  5. Join the “power down” movement. Setting electronics, such as computers or printers, to sleep mode after 15 minutes of inactivity. Even small reductions in “phantom load” (the electricity drawn by electronics when idle) can add up to meaningful savings over time.

Energy efficiency isn’t just about cutting costs: it’s about building smarter, more resilient homes and businesses that can thrive in a resource-conscious world.

RESA invites you to celebrate Energy Efficiency Day by sharing your own tips and success stories. Post them on social media and tag @RESAUSA #EEDay2025 to keep the conversation going.
