National Clean Energy Week 2025: Powering a Cleaner Future with Retail Energy

The Retail Energy Supply Association (RESA) is proud to celebrate the 9th annual National Clean Energy Week, which highlights the policies, industries, and innovations that power our daily lives while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Building a more sustainable and affordable energy future remains a top priority for states, municipalities, and retail energy suppliers nationwide.

This year, 28 governors issued proclamations in support of National Clean Energy Week, reflecting growing momentum toward ambitious zero-emission goals. Across the country, leaders are working to expand access to alternative energy sources, including nuclear, solar, wind, hydropower, wave and geothermal.

Retail Energy’s Role in Clean Energy Adoption

Retail energy suppliers are at the intersection of innovation, competition, and sustainability. Their impact goes well beyond offering consumers electricity and natural gas products at competitive rates. Today, suppliers are expanding access to green energy plans, smart thermostats, and smart meters that help households and businesses lower costs and reduce emissions.

With growing public demand for renewable energy, retail suppliers have invested in voluntary renewable energy programs and renewable energy credits (RECs) that allow customers to choose 100% wind power, solar blends, or hybrid clean energy options. These market-driven solutions empower consumers to reduce their carbon footprint while accelerating the development of renewable energy projects nationwide.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

Despite record growth in clean energy adoption, challenges remain. One of the most pressing is grid modernization. With demand rising from electric vehicles, artificial intelligence–driven data centers, and electrified industries, the need for a resilient, flexible, and reliable grid is more urgent than ever. Retail energy suppliers are working with regulators and policymakers to ensure infrastructure upgrades keep pace with innovation.

Policy fragmentation also continues to pose challenges, as states maintain different approaches to renewable support and energy competition. RESA remains committed to advocating for consistent, pro-competition policies that expand consumer choice, drive private-sector investment, and foster innovation in clean energy technology.

Looking Ahead

As the U.S. energy transition accelerates, retail suppliers are positioned to be key partners for states, municipalities and consumers. Their role includes not only providing clean energy options but also educating communities about the benefits of sustainability, efficiency, and consumer choice.

RESA will continue working alongside legislators, regulators, and stakeholders to advance affordable, accessible clean energy through competition and innovation. Through collaboration and commitment, retail energy suppliers are helping lead the clean energy revolution, empowering consumers, driving market solutions, and powering a cleaner, brighter future for all.
