California PUC Report Illustrates Strong Demand For Retail Electricity Choice in California

May 16, 2012

HARRISBURG, PA — A new analysis by staff at the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) provides striking evidence of the huge demand for retail electricity choice in California. The data, compiled in response to a motion filed by the Retail Energy Supply Association (RESA), Alliance for Retail Energy Markets (AReM), and Direct Access Customer Coalition, show that the most recent opportunity to enroll in direct access was oversubscribed within a matter of seconds.

California's Competitive Energy Landscape

California has limited customer choice for electricity at retail.

The ability to purchase competitively priced natural gas is available to large industrial and commercial users, commercial customers, and residential customers in most of the state's utility territories.

There is limited customer choice to shop retail at California electric companies. Given the overwhelming evidence that electricity customers want direct access to competitively priced California electric companies' products and services, RESA strongly supports legislation to expand direct access and customer choice.

In addition to advocating the expansion of customer choice in California, RESA actively participates in proceedings before the California Public Utilities Commission to preserve the limited direct access provided in California and to ensure that customers with direct access continue to have a choice among innovative product and service offerings from competitive suppliers.
