RESA Marks National Energy Shopping Day by Encouraging Consumers and Businesses to shop and compare energy plans

Annual observance highlights the value of consumer choice in energy markets

HARRISBURG, Pa. (June 22, 2026) – The Retail Energy Supply Association (RESA), the national trade association representing competitive retail energy suppliers, is marking National Energy Shopping Day by encouraging consumers to explore their energy options and learn more about the benefits of competitive energy markets.

Now in its seventh year, National Energy Shopping Day is observed annually on the first day of summer and is recognized in Chase’s Calendar of Events. Established by RESA, the day raises awareness of energy choice and reminds consumers to take an active role in selecting the energy products and services that best fit their needs.

As energy affordability remains a top concern for many U.S. households and businesses, consumer demand for energy choice remains strong. A recent statewide poll in Maryland conducted by The Gonzales Group found that 77 percent of voters support retail energy competition and consumer choice. The survey also found that nearly three-quarters of respondents reported higher energy bills over the past year, underscoring the importance of policies that empower consumers and promote competitive energy markets.

“National Energy Shopping Day reminds consumers that they have the power to choose,” said Tracy McCormick, executive director of RESA. “Competitive energy markets give customers access to a variety of products, plans and services that can fit their specific needs, whether they are looking for price certainty, renewable energy options, value-added services or simply the freedom to select the supplier they prefer.”

Today, consumers and businesses in 13 states and the District of Columbia can choose their electricity and natural gas suppliers, or both. Competitive energy markets provide customers with access to a wide range of products and services, including fixed-price plans, renewable energy offerings, rewards programs and other innovative options available in the marketplace.

RESA wants National Energy Shopping Day to help individuals, companies and organizations to:

“At a time when consumers are closely watching their energy costs, the ability to compare options and select a supplier is more important than ever,” said McCormick. “National Energy Shopping Day encourages consumers to take a few minutes to review their options and determine whether another plan may be a better fit for their home or business.”

RESA remains committed to promoting competitive energy markets, supporting consumer education, and advancing policies that expand access to energy choice nationwide.
